Why It Matters: The Climate Challenge

Cities contribute to 75% of global carbon dioxide emissions. To meet 2030 and 2050 climate targets requires bold action at the city level, where complex systems and rapid urbanisation continue to drive emissions. UP2030 addresses this challenge by focusing on innovative, community-driven solutions to accelerate the transition to climate-neutral cities.

Our Role: Mapping for Change's Contribution

As a key partner in the UP2030 project, Mapping for Change is deeply involved in ensuring that local communities and stakeholders have a voice in shaping their city’s climate-neutral future. Our work includes:

  • City and Stakeholder Engagement: Mapping for Change is leading the deployment of innovative, participatory, and inclusive engagement activities. These activities involve direct collaboration with communities to identify the key needs for policy updates, uncover barriers to following best practices, and explore the drivers of change across each pilot city.

  • Interactive Community Mapping: Our Community Mapping platform is a core tool for engaging residents at the neighbourhood level. This platform allows for the visualisation of local data, empowering communities to participate in decision-making processes and ensuring that their needs are reflected in the urban climate transition. This tool supports spatial justice and fosters greater community participation.

  • City Liaison for Belfast: Mapping for Change acts as the City Liaison for the Belfast pilot, overseeing the engagement of stakeholders and ensuring that the city’s climate neutrality strategies are co-created with its residents.

Gender and Equality Analysis

: In addition to our role in stakeholder engagement, Mapping for Change leads the

gender and equality analysis

throughout the project. This ensures that the transition to climate-neutral cities is inclusive, addressing the diverse needs of all community members.

Toolkit for Stakeholder Engagement

We’ve developed the Toolkit for Stakeholder Engagement towards Carbon Neutrality, a step-by-step guide to support cities in engaging stakeholders effectively, from planning to evaluation.

Partners and Cities

Funded by Horizon Europe, led by Fraunhofer, UP2030 collaborates with 45 partners and includes pilot cities like Belfast, Milan, Rotterdam, and Rio de Janeiro.
