Project Overview

Three zones were initially established:

  • Bell Foundry

  • New Parks

  • Thringstone & Whitwick

Each of these areas has been the focus of efforts to understand local strengths, identify key community assets, and promote the long-term safety and well-being of residents.

Our Role: Research to Inform Development

Mapping for Change was commissioned to carry out the research phase of the PeopleZones initiative. Our role was to ensure that future support and investment would be directed where it could have the most sustainable impact. Using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, we engaged with local communities to uncover hidden assets, connections, and ambitions, while identifying the people, services, and local businesses that contribute to each neighbourhood’s identity and resilience.

Research Approach and Engagement Methods

To ensure inclusivity and gather meaningful insights from across the community, we used a variety of engagement methods, including:

  • Online and Paper Surveys: Distributed to gather feedback from a wide cross-section of residents.

  • One-to-One Interviews: Conducted with community leaders and residents to explore personal insights and experiences.

  • Liaison with Community Leaders: To better understand existing networks and identify strengths within community structures.

  • Interactive Workshops: Held with residents to map assets and generate ideas for improving community safety and resilience.

Outcomes

The findings from our research were compiled into detailed reports (linked above) and presented to the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to guide future investment and development in the People Zones. These reports provide a roadmap for creating safer, stronger communities, highlighting local assets, potential gaps in services, and opportunities for sustainable impact.

Additionally, an interactive asset map was created, allowing residents and stakeholders to engage with the identified community assets and contribute to the ongoing development of their neighbourhoods.
